The most common question any professional game developer is asked is, “How do I get to make games?” (Variations include: How does my son/daughter/coworker’s friend/poodle get a game job? I like to play games; I think Tester would be the best job ever, etc.)
Getting into the industry has changed a lot since I started in 1998, which was at the tail end of the timeframe when you heard the really interesting stories of “How I got in.”
Just having a passion for games isn’t enough anymore; you have to be able to prove you’re capable of making something good just to get an interview. Whether you’re a programmer, level designer, artist, sound designer, animator, or any of the many other roles needed to make a modern game, having a good portfolio and experience are key to landing a job.
This month, I’ll be bringing you a series of articles on how to get started in the game industry. You’ll probably find that it’s both easier and much harder than you imagined.
